Kidney Stones: Things People Should Know

Kidney stones are the stones made of chemicals such as calcium, oxalate, urate, cystine, xanthine, and phosphate. The main function of kidneys is to filter the blood and remove these chemicals and other toxins from the body. These chemicals and toxins flush out the body through urine. When these chemicals and toxins are not removed with urine and are left behind in the kidneys, they form solid masses and these masses are called stones.

Kidney stones can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball. Some kidney stones are also of the size of a pebble. The severity of the symptoms of kidney stones varies with the size of kidney stones. Small stones might not cause any symptoms or the symptoms might be very mild. Large stones, on the other hand, might cause the symptoms to become acute.

Some of the symptoms of kidney stones are:

  • Pain on one side of the back or abdomen
  • Blood in urine
  • Vomiting
  • Dark coloured urine
  • Urine emitting foul smell
  • Feeling of cold
  • Fever
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Releasing a small amount of urine frequently

People experiencing these symptoms should not wait to consult the best doctors for kidney stones in metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore.

Doctors who treat kidney stones and other kidney-related problems are known as a nephrologist. The best nephrologists will prescribe the tests like CT scan, X-ray, ultrasound, and MRI to examine the size of the stones and to check whether they are obstructing the urinary tract or not.

If doctors find out that the stone is small, they might suggest the patients wait for the stone to pass out of the body on their own. They usually recommend patients to drink a lot of water, around 8 to 10 glasses a day and other fluids as they help in pushing the stone out of the body through urine. Doctors might prescribe some medications that may help the urinary tract to release kidney stones.

Doctors use surgical procedures like lithotripsy, PCNL/Mini PERC surgery, or ureteroscopy only if the stones are large enough and obstructing urinary tract or causing significant symptoms.

People suffering from acute symptoms of kidney stones should not wait to see the doctor as it might cause infection or any other kidney damage.
