Cirrhosis: Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

The liver is known to be the largest internal organ in the human body; thus, its role and responsibilities are a rank higher as well. A healthy liver manages the metabolism of an individual by detoxifying the body on a daily basis. So, if any damages occur in this vital organ, then the entire system of the patient can get affected. Hospitals renowned for liver treatment in Delhi, Mumbai and other metropolitan cities of the country should be consulted in case of serious diseases such as cirrhosis. In this condition, the scarring of the liver is extensive and requires immediate medical attention.

Symptoms

Cirrhosis happens to be the end stage of fibrosis, i.e., liver scarring, but does not exhibit any symptoms or signs early on. Patients with this disease tend to experience jaundice, fatigue, loss of appetite, easy bruising, swelling in different body parts, unexplained weight loss, and itchy skin. Besides this, some patients get slurred speech, mental confusion, and even drowsiness.

Causes

Liver damage to this extent is known to be caused by substance abuse such as drugs and alcohol, chronic hepatitis, iron build-up in the liver, cystic fibrosis, issues related to the bile ducts, etc. While in some cases, the condition occurs in patients with a genetic disease such as glycogen storage disease. Other diseases that cause cirrhosis in several patients worldwide is syphilis that is a bacterial sexual infection.

Treatment

For patients who have an alcohol addiction, the first concern is to cure it before further damage takes place in the organ. After observing the signs, the medical practitioner would prescribe labs test, ultrasounds, and biopsy to analyse the extent of the damage. In less severe cases, medications are prescribed to control diseases that might be causing liver damage. But in the advanced cases, a liver transplant is the only way to save the patient’s life. This process requires several tests to determine if the patient is an ideal transplant candidate or not. If every test indicates that the procedure can be initiated, then the liver of a deceased donor or part of an alive donor’s liver is transplanted into the patient’s body.

Patients who suffer from this fatal condition should get treatment from only the best liver transplant hospitals in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and other metropolitan cities.
